Easy Haupia Recipe (Hawaiian Coconut Dessert)
Creamy, smooth, and delicious, haupia is a classic Hawaiian coconut dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. This easy version is perfect for parties, family dinners, or whenever you want a tropical treat.
Ingredients
- 1 can (13.5 oz) coconut milk
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup cold water (to mix with cornstarch)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
1. Prepare the Pan
Lightly grease an 8×8 dish or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
2. Mix Coconut Base
In a saucepan, combine:
- coconut milk
- 2 cups water
- sugar
- pinch of salt
Heat over medium heat until warm, stirring occasionally.
3. Make Starch Mixture (Slurry)
In a small bowl, whisk together:
- cornstarch
- 1/2 cup cold water
Mix until smooth.
4. Thicken the Haupia
Slowly pour the cornstarch mixture into the warm coconut mixture while whisking constantly.
Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring nonstop, until thick and smooth like pudding.
5. Chill
Pour mixture into prepared dish and smooth the top.
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until firm.
6. Serve
Cut into squares and enjoy cold. (Optional Topping: Add toasted coconut)
